GOLD: Only Indonesia stand in the way

Tee Jing Yi lost to Indonesia’s Linda Wenifanetri in three games.
Malaysia marched into the Sea Games men's team final at Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday but the women's brave resistance ended in a 3-1 defeat to Indonesia.

The men's swept past Singapore 3-0 with little trouble and will meet the hosts, who struggled to subdue Thailand 3-2, in tomorrow's final.

Arif Latif was the only player to get into some trouble, needing three games to get past Ashton Chen 21-14, 12-21, 21-15 in the second singles.

Liew Daren put Malaysia 1-0 ahead after a 21-17, 21-18 win over Derek Wong before Lim Khim Wah-Goh Wei Shem downed Liu Yi-Terry Yeo 21-13, 21-13.

"This is my first match here. I'm a little unhappy with how I played but thankfully I won and we are in the final.

"I hope to play better in the final. I'll probably meet Simon (Santoso), whom I've played before," said Arif, who was rested in Malaysia's 3-1 quarter-final win over Vietnam.

Indonesia suffered an early setback when Taufik Hidayat crashed 21-13, 21-16 to Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk while Markis Hido-Hendra Setiawan were stunned by the unheralded Maneepong Jongjit-Bodin Isara 22-20, 21-23, 21-18.

Simon, Hayom Rumbaka and Bona Septano-Mohammad Ahsan came to the hosts' rescue in a nervy performance.

Malaysia, missing many players from the 2009 gold medal winning team, briefly threatened an upset in the women's semi-finals when Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei burnished their growing reputations by upsetting Vita Marissa-Nadya Melati 21-19, 21-23, 28-26 to draw Malaysia level at 1-1.

Linda Wenifanetri downed Tee Jing Yi 18-21, 21-13, 21-15 in the first singles before Adriyanti Firdasari edged Lydia Cheah 7-21, 21-13, 21-14 for a 2-1 lead.

Indonesia completed formalities when Nitya Khrishinda-Anneke Feinya Agustine defeated Marylen Ng-Lim Yin Loo 21-9, 21-16 to set up a final with Thailand, who defeated Singapore 3-0, today.
