Ankle Injury Ends Jing Yi’s Hopes Of A Bronze Medal

JAKARTA: Shuttler Tee Jing Yi was on the verge of a big upset in the SEA Games but it all fell apart after injuring her ankle during the quarter-finals of the women’s singles at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Senayan yesterday.

The 20-year-old was progressing confidently in the rubber game against top seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand but a sudden burst of movement from the backline to retrieve a shuttle at the net, while leading 16-14, caused Jing Yi to fall and injure her ankle.

She bravely fought on but while her heart was willing, her injured leg couldn’t take the strain as she tried to ward off the relentless attack by the Thai girl.

Finally, Jing Yi crumbled 21-16, 14-21, 17-21 and was left ruing her missed opportunity of at least a bronze in her Games debut.

“I almost had Porntip but the fall caused me great pain. I tried to hold on but she took advantage of my restricted movement,” lamented Jing Yi as she tended to her swollen ankle.

“All my matches against Porntip have been close. It is quite frustrating. I hope to recover in time to make the trip to the Macau Open in two weeks’ time.”

There was no happy ending either for the rest of the shuttlers in the Malaysian team, except for the men’s doubles pair of Lim Khim Wah-Goh Wei Shem.

Lydia Cheah, Liew Daren, Mak Hee Chun-Ong Soon Hock, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Ong Jian Guo-Sabrina Chong all fell by the wayside yesterday.

Much was expected of Daren, but he crashed out at 20-22, 12-21 to Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia.

National doubles coach Tan Kim Her said Hee Chun-Soon Hock could not sustain their form in the 14-21, 13-21 loss to top seeds Bona Septano-Mohd Ahsan.

“They had no problems with their service returns but they did not have the killer shots. Their attack was a letdown,” said Kim Her.

Indonesian Open Grand Prix winners Khe Wei-Vivian also gave a good fight before running out of steam to lose 22-24, 15-21 to Anneke Feinya Agustine-Nitya Krishina Maheswari of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Khim Wah-V Shem, are assured a solitary bronze medal for Malaysia in the individual event.

They thrashed Myanmar’s Than Lwin Aung-Thet Lwin Myint 21-5, 21-13 to set up a meeting with home favourites Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan in the semi-finals.
