Khe Wei Wants To Iimprove Consistency To Push For Olympic Spot

PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles pair Woon Khe Wei (pic)-Vivian Hoo have taken the badminton world by storm since their breakthrough semi-final appearance in the Thailand Open last May.

Khe Wei-Vivian, who are now the second ranked Malaysian pair, have since scaled greater heights, reaching the quarter-finals of the Vietnam Open and the semi-finals of the Taiwan Open before winning their first-ever title – the Indonesian Open GP Gold last October.

And they have, along the way, knocked out several top pairs, including world No. 8 Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii of Indonesia and China’s Cheng Shu-Pan Pan and Bao Yixin-Zhong Qianxin.

Khe Wei-Vivian also reached the semi-finals of the India Open GP Gold last week, before narrowly losing to top seeds and world No. 5 Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna of Japan.

That performance saw them rise to a career best 21st spot in the world – just five positions away from the Olympics qualifying mark. Only the top 16 pairs in the world will win a ticket to London this year.

Despite an excellent year, Khe Wei is still worried about their lack of consistency and she has promised to keep working hard to push for an Olympic spot.

“It has been a good 2011 but there were a few tournaments towards the end of the year where we didn’t do too well and lacked consistency,” said the 22-year-old Khe Wei.

“In India, we were trailing 10-18 in the rubber game. Although we managed to catch up, mistakes at the end cost us dearly.

“With our current ranking, we definitely have a chance to qualify for London but we’ll need to work harder and brush up on our flaws.

“Our biggest problem is that we are too impatient and we tend to go for the kill too quickly.

“That has to change. We have to learn to be more patient and not rush things.”

Khe Wei, however, remains optimistic that they’ll be able to put up a good performance in the coming Korean Open (which begins tomorrow) and the Malaysian Open despite the tough draws.

In the Korean Open, which will be held in Seoul, Khe Wei-Vivian will face top Indian pair Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa in the first round. A win will set them up against world No. 1 Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang of China.

In the home tournament, which begins on Jan 10, the young pair face a nightmarish first round match against Miyuki-Satoko, the same pair who beat them in India.

Still, they can take heart from their own performances a week ago and the fact that the Malaysian crowd will be there to support them.
