KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Ho Yen Mei is focused on one thing – to achieve a top-eight finish in the girls’ singles in her last World Junior Championships, which start in Alor Setar on Monday.

A quarter-final berth will guarantee Yen Mei a place in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, in August.

Despite being under the weather, the 17-year-old Yen Mei has vowed to give her best. The other Malaysians competing are S. Kisona, Lee Ying Ying and Goh Jin Wei.

The World Junior Championships will start with the mixed team event on Monday followed by the individual events.

“This is my last year as a junior. I want to make it a memorable one. Unfortunately, I am down with flu right now ... hopefully, I will be able to bounce back quickly,” said Yen Mei, who reached the top 16 last year.

A player who finishes in the top eight will get an automatic entry into the Youth Olympic Games – but one country cannot have more than two representatives in one event.

If Yen Mei or other Malaysians fail to make the top eight, they can qualify based on the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) May 1 world junior rankings list.

Yen Mei is now ranked 24th but she will stand a better chance if she breaks into the top 15.

Only 27 boys singles and 27 girls singles will qualify for the Youth Olympic Games.

In order to give her more time to recover, Yen Mei may be rested when Malaysia begin their campaign in the mixed team event against Australia in Group Z2 on Monday.

Malaysia have the option of fielding Ying Ying, Kisona and the 13-year-old teenage star Jin Wei.

“We have a good draw and all the players are very motivated. We did not do very well in the Asian Junior Championships (Malaysia lost in the quarter-finals in Taiwan in February) but we aim to do better this time,” said Yen Mei.

The eight group winners will advance to the knockout stage.

Malaysia to be top three in badminton by 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have promised to propel Malaysian badminton to a top-three position in the world by 2020.

For now, that target is good enough for Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin after finally meeting up with BAM president Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff and several other top badminton brass on Wednesday to clear the air on where Malaysian badminton is heading.

Khairy had voiced his concern over the lack of talents coming through the ranks and BAM’s failure to find capable successors for world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei during the Malaysian Open in January.

For now, Khairy has accepted BAM’s lofty goal.

Currently, the countries ahead of Malaysia are China, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Denmark. Thailand – and even India, Germany and Singapore, to some extent.

“The BAM’s top brass came to see me yesterday and they displayed a strategic road map. They hope to become the top three badminton nation by the year 2020,” said Khairy after the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100Plus awards ceremony on Thursday.

“They have sought my assistance to help develop the sport as they want to partner the schools. I will discuss this with the Education Ministry. BAM are looking at many programmes to broaden their talent base, which I think is pertinent.”

Khairy had also queried the coaching set-up which has gone through change after change. After seven months, BAM are now back to their original structure of having one chief coach each for the singles and doubles departments.

Rashid Sidek heads the singles department, while BAM have yet to find a leader for the doubles.

“The BA of Malaysia have put in place a new coaching system. They have also established a new player analysis system in partnership with the National Sports Institute. For now, I am pleased with what they have presented,” he said.

On Chong Wei’s status in the national team, Khairy has asked BAM to persuade the player to stay on until the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The 31-year-old Chong Wei, who is eyeing his first Asian Games gold in Incheon, South Korea, in September had indicated his desire to quit by the end of the year.

If Chong Wei does quit, and with no quality players to pass the baton to, Malaysia could return home from the Rio Games without any medal.

That is something Khairy is not prepared to accept.

Cabaran tadbir sekolah sukan

“Zaman saya dulu semuanya sendirian berhad. Nak pergi latihan pun kena duit sendiri. Inisiatif sendiri. Tapi semangat bersukan tu tinggi jadi kami tak pentingkan soal kewangan. Selagi boleh sara sendiri, saya sara diri sendiri. Ada masanya bapa turut membantu. Pada zaman sekarang tak boleh.

" Saya ingin berterima kasih kepada jenama korporat seperti MILO kerana banyak memberi sumbangan kepada kanak-kanak Malaysia untuk berjaya dalam bidang sukan.Sokongan yang diberikan oleh MILO turut membantu membakar semangat pelajar kami untuk terus berjaya dalam sukan,” sambungnya.

Zaman kanak-kanak paling indah

“Masa kecil saya memang tomboi sedikit.

Berhenti jadi atlet?

KUALA LUMPUR: Youngster Ho Yen Mei got a timely boost ahead of the Asian Junior Championships when she nailed the girl’s singles title in the ASEAN Schools Games at Hanoi, which ended on Sunday.

Yen Mei, an aspiring badminton shuttler from Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), staved off strong resistance from compatriot Yap Rui Chen 21-19, 17-21, 21-14 in the final.

She will now head to Sabah with extra impetus to show that Malaysia have talents in the girls singles department when she takes part in the Asian Junior meet starting on July 7. Malaysia have never featured in the final of the girls’ singles event.

The 17-year-old Yen Mei will be joined by five other singles shuttlers — Rui Chen, Sylvia Kavita Kumares, S. Kisona, Lee Zii Yii and Lee Ying Ying for the Asian junior meet.

Meanwhile, in the Asean Schools Games, Malaysia also won another gold medal in badminton through the boys’ doubles Chua Khek Wei-Mohammad Amzzar.

Malaysia returned home from the ASEAN meet with a medal haul of 25-30-30 to finish second overall behind champions and hosts Vietnam. Vietnam ended the Games with a massive haul of 50-27-23 to top the eight-country field.

Besides badminton, the other sports contested were aquatics, athletics, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, sepak takraw, pencak silat and artistic gymnastics.

Kisona stays focused ahead of Asian Junior Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Young shuttler S. Kisona looks like any other ordinary Indian girl but when she speaks, she makes heads turn with her fluent Mandarin.

“Yes, I do get those surprised looks,” giggled the 15-year-old Kisona.

“I studied at the Yuk Hua Primary Chinese School in Jelebu, Negri Sembilan and so naturally, I speak the language. In fact, I converse in Mandarin with my three siblings at home and with most of my team-mates in Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) too. Knowing Mandarin does help to build stronger camaraderie in the team.”

Kisona is one of the promising girl singles players in BJSS and on Sunday, she underlined her talent by winning two titles – the Under-16 singles and doubles events in the 100Plus National Grand Prix Finals. She won the doubles with Lee Ying Ying.

She had also swept a double in the Under-14 category in the GP Finals last year.

For her consistent performances, she won the right to represent the country in the Asian Junior Championships from July 7-14 at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. She will be joined by Ho Yen Mei, Yap Rui Chen, Lee Zi Yii, Sylvia Kavita Kumares and Lee Ying Ying.

If all goes well for Kisona, the slender policeman’s daughter may be able to arrest one of the current problems in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) – the lack of quality women singles star coming through the ranks.

Kisona wants to make it big but she realises that she needs to be disciplined and diligent.

“I am very focused in my badminton career now. I have been playing in many junior tournaments to sharpen my game and I do hope to become a top player one day,” said Kisona, who admires and aspires to be like India’s Saina Nehwal.

In fact, since coming under the charge of Indonesian Rony Agustinus in April, Kisona has shown improvement. She won the girls’ Under-16 and Under-18 titles in the Thailand International in Trang.
Her strong supporters and motivators are her parents –Selvaduray and Valarmathi.

“My father is a policeman and he is strict. He has encouraged me since I took up the sport when I was four years old. And when I first won a title in the National Close as a Standard Two student, I knew, this was the direction that I wanted to take,” said the Form Three student.

“Currently, juggling between studies and sports is a challenge because I am hardly here. I am going to the Asean School Games next (in Hanoi from June 22-30) but my ultimate goal is to do well in my second Asian Junior championships. If I do well, I have better chance of representing the country at the World Junior championships (in Bangkok from Oct 23-Nov 7),” she added.

For the record, last year, Malaysia had only one representative in the final of the Asian Junior meet but Soong Joo Ven lost to Kento Momota of Japan in the final of the boys’ singles and failed to defend the title won by Zulfadli Zulkifli in 2011.

The injury made her a bench-warmer for the most part of the year.

On Thursday, however, she was on fire as she combined superbly with Vivian Hoo to knock out fourth seed and world No. 7 Eom Hye-won-Jang Ye-na of South Korea 21-13, 17-21, 21-17 in 66 minutes in the women’s doubles.

The breakthrough has given Khe Wei and Vivian a big boost in their bid to qualify for this year’s World Championships in August.

Khe Wei, who welcomed the breakthrough as an early birthday present, was overjoyed.

“Vivian and I played well to reach our first Super Series quarter-finals after a year – and to do it at the All-England is great,” said Khe Wei, who will turn 24 on March 18.

“I felt no pain during the match against the Koreans but I can feel it now,” she laughs.

“I must continue to monitor (her ankle condition). It’s been a tough one year for me. I have stayed away from competition for many months. I’m glad that despite all the difficulties, Vivian has stuck by my side.”

Before picking up the injury at last year’s Malaysian Open, Khe Wei-Vivian were riding high. They showed that they were able replacements for former internationals Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty by winning the Indonesian Open Grand Prix Gold in 2011.

“The injury stalled our progress. I could take the physical pain but it was a mentally taxing experience. I’m stronger now and hope to build from here,” said Khe Wei

Vivian, who will turn 23 a day after Khe Wei’s birthday, feels that the hard work they’ve been putting in under coach Rosman Razak is finally bearing fruit.

“We came here with good preparation. We did well to control the Koreans from the start and we hope to continue playing with confidence against our next opponents,” said Vivian.

Their last eight opponents are sixth seeds Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna of Japan. The Malaysians have beaten them once in three meetings – in the second round of last year’s Malaysian Open where Khe Wei injured her ankle.

Whatever the outcome, world No. 28 Khe Wei-Vivian’s good showing here will surely help them break into the top 24 – and strengthen their claim for a place in the world meet.

Results:

SECOND ROUND

Men’s singles: Tommy Sugiarto (Ina) bt Chou Tien-chen (Tpe) 21-12, 21-8; Nguyen Tien Minh (Vie) bt Sourabh Verma (Ind) 21-19, 21-19; Lee Chong Wei (Mas) bt Wang Zhengming (Chn) 21-17, 21-19; Jan O Jorgensen (Den) bt Sony Dwi Kuncoro (Ina) 11-7 (rtd); P.
The top seeded Norshahida of Federal Territories defeated See To Chia Yee 21-12, 21-13 in the second round before going on to beat Penang’s P. Dheshnee 21-15, 21-15 to make the last four.

The 17-year-old shuttler, who is under the charge of former national player Wong Mew Choo at BJSS, will next face joint third-fourth seed Kaw Meng Wei of Johor for a place in the final.

Joining Norshahida in the semi-finals is BJSS team-mate Yap Rui Chen, who eliminated another Penangite, Chua Cheah Lin, 21-15, 21-10 in the last eight and will next take on Perak’s Nurul Syuhaidah.

In the boys’ Under-18, top seed Zairul Nizam Zainuddin blasted his way into the semi-finals with an impressive 21-18, 21-17 win over Sarawak’s Eric Jong.

The Johor lad will take on unseeded Ong Yew Sin of Malacca, who eliminated FT’s Chow Foo Wah 21-19, 21-19.

Meanwhile, 12-year-old badminton prodigy Goh Jin Wei, who is the defending champion in the girls’ Under-12, is once again dominating the field.

The pocket dynamite has yet to give up more than 10 points as she first beat Johor’s Tew Jia Yu 21-5, 21-4 in the second round before thrashing FT’s Oon A Xuan 21-2, 21-7 in the quarter-finals.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5254604526068155481.post-53234390345196705882012-01-06T13:29:00.005+08:002012-05-29T14:06:20.999+08:00World Junior Champs Nelson And Teo Out To Break The Jinx

PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Nelson Heg Wei Keat-Teo Ee Yi (pic) are determined to break the hoodoo of being world junior champions.

None of the previous six Malaysian winning pairs have made the transition to senior ranks, but Wei Keat-Ee Yi believe they have the quality and the will to succeed where the others failed.

Gan Wye Teck-Chan Chong Ming (winners in 1996), Chan Chong Ming-Teo Kok Seng (1998), Hoon Thien How-Tan Boon Heong (2004), Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang (2008), Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han (2009) and Ow Yao Han-Yew Hong Kheng (2010) all failed to make the grade. It was either a case of fractured styles or fractured relationships. Either way, the partnerships never stood the test of time beyond the junior years .

But Wei Keat-Ee Yi, who won the world crown last year, firmly believe that their friendship and understanding will prevail. They are confident that they can build on their two-year partnership to become Malaysia’s next top men’s doubles pair.

The duo were promoted to the national senior team late last year and have been training under chief coach Tan Kim Her and his assistants, Rosman Razak and South Korean Yoo Yong-sung, for the past one month.

Wei Keat, 19, said they were comfortable working with the three coaches and were looking forward to playing in more tournaments this year.

“We can cope with the change in the level of play. It is much more demanding but we are determined to succeed and become serious contenders,” said Wei Keat.

“The coaches work on different aspects of our game. Kim Her focuses on our court management while Yong-sung works on improving our speed. Rosman gives us input on our technique. We are learning a lot from them.”

Wei Keat-Ee Yi want to make an instant impact with a breakthrough performance in the Malaysia Open, having failed to get past the qualifying tournament in the previous two editions.

“The draw is quite challenging and it will be an achievement if we make it to the main draw this time. But we have to beat the odds if we want to improve on our rankings. We are currently ranked 100th in the world and our aim is hit the top 80 bracket by the end of this year ,” said Wei Keat.

In the qualifying tournament, the duo will have to overcome two strong pairs - Liao Min-chun-Wu Chun-wei of Taiwan and fourth seeds Patipat Chalardchalem-Nipitphon Puangpuapech of Thailand - to advance.

If they succeed, they will take on Indonesia’s top pair Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano in the opening round of the US$400,000 tournament at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil next week.

“Our ultimate goal is of course to be the country’s top pair. It was great winning the world junior title but all that is in the past now. It’s the future that matters.”

It cannot happen fast enough. With Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong struggling, the country needs Wei Keat-Ee Yi to power up fast.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5254604526068155481.post-57562171749717950892012-01-03T11:01:00.002+08:002012-05-29T14:06:01.752+08:00Khe Wei Wants To Iimprove Consistency To Push For Olympic Spot

PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles pair Woon Khe Wei (pic)-Vivian Hoo have taken the badminton world by storm since their breakthrough semi-final appearance in the Thailand Open last May.

Khe Wei-Vivian, who are now the second ranked Malaysian pair, have since scaled greater heights, reaching the quarter-finals of the Vietnam Open and the semi-finals of the Taiwan Open before winning their first-ever title – the Indonesian Open GP Gold last October.

And they have, along the way, knocked out several top pairs, including world No. 8 Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii of Indonesia and China’s Cheng Shu-Pan Pan and Bao Yixin-Zhong Qianxin.

Khe Wei-Vivian also reached the semi-finals of the India Open GP Gold last week, before narrowly losing to top seeds and world No. 5 Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna of Japan.

That performance saw them rise to a career best 21st spot in the world – just five positions away from the Olympics qualifying mark. Only the top 16 pairs in the world will win a ticket to London this year.

Despite an excellent year, Khe Wei is still worried about their lack of consistency and she has promised to keep working hard to push for an Olympic spot.

“It has been a good 2011 but there were a few tournaments towards the end of the year where we didn’t do too well and lacked consistency,” said the 22-year-old Khe Wei.

“In India, we were trailing 10-18 in the rubber game. Although we managed to catch up, mistakes at the end cost us dearly.

“With our current ranking, we definitely have a chance to qualify for London but we’ll need to work harder and brush up on our flaws.

“Our biggest problem is that we are too impatient and we tend to go for the kill too quickly.

“That has to change. We have to learn to be more patient and not rush things.”

Khe Wei, however, remains optimistic that they’ll be able to put up a good performance in the coming Korean Open (which begins tomorrow) and the Malaysian Open despite the tough draws.

In the Korean Open, which will be held in Seoul, Khe Wei-Vivian will face top Indian pair Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa in the first round. A win will set them up against world No. 1 Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang of China.

In the home tournament, which begins on Jan 10, the young pair face a nightmarish first round match against Miyuki-Satoko, the same pair who beat them in India.

Still, they can take heart from their own performances a week ago and the fact that the Malaysian crowd will be there to support them.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5254604526068155481.post-26945920411122604312011-11-25T10:28:00.001+08:002012-05-29T14:04:41.027+08:00Chan-Goh Stun Second Seeds In Their Own Den

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying made a breakthrough in their careers when they upset second seeds Xu Chen-Ma Jin of China to reach the quarter-finals of the China Open in Shanghai yesterday.

World No. 9 Peng Soon-Liu Ying battled for 49 minutes to beat the All-England champions 21-14, 11-21, 21-16 in the second round.

It was their first win over a Chinese pair in their four-year-old partnership.

Today, Peng Soon-Liu Ying will take on Thailand’s A. Songphon-V. Kunchala for a place in the semi-finals and national coach Jeremy Gan hoped that the duo continue their fantastic run.

“This is the first time that Peng Soon-Liu Ying have beaten a Chinese pair and this win should boost their confidence,” said Jeremy in a telephone interview.

“They played well against the Chinese today (yesterday), showing quality in their first three shots.

“Their service and return were sharp and they played smartly rather than just attacking aimlessly.
“It will be not easy against the Thais but I hope Peng Soon-Liu Ying will ride on their renewed confidence to make the semi-finals.

It was also a good day for Malaysia’s top men’s singles and double’s men shuttlers Lee Chong Wei and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong respectively.

Yesterday, world No 1 and top seed Chong Wei thrashed Japan’s Kenichi Tago with a 21-9, 21-7 win in 29 minutes.

He will face another Japanese, endurance man Sho Sasaki in the last eight.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong were also in impressive form when they blew away Ingo Kindervater-Johannes Schoettler of Germany with a 21-7, 21-16 win to set up a meeting with South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong.

The Malaysians have lost to the Koreans five times and hopefully, they will be able to get the monkey off their backs today.

In the women’s singles, three-time world junior champion Inthanon Ratchanok of Thailand stole the show when she edged top seed Wang Shixian of China with a 21-18, 21-19 to book a quarter-final showdown with Li Xuerui of China.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5254604526068155481.post-17840204918750456792011-11-19T12:26:00.003+08:002012-05-29T14:03:13.887+08:00Careless V Shem Left To Rue Costly Mistake

JAKARTA: If only Goh V Shem had not served the shuttle into the net when the score was tied at 19-19 in the deciding game, it would have been a different story.

But that was what the SEA Games debutant did and the fanatical home fans in the Istora Bung Karno roared in delight.

That crucial mistake saw V Shem-Lim Khim Wah let slip a golden opportunity to upstage former Olympic and world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia, going down 13-21, 21-17, 19-21 in 46 minutes in the semi-finals.

With the defeat, V Shem-Khim Wah had to be satisfied with a bronze medal to go along with the silver they won in the team event after losing to Indonesia in the final.

The 22-year-old V Shem was disappointed that he muffed it up.

“We had a good chance but we blew it today. If only I had been more careful. I will polish up this area of my game,” said V Shem.

The game started horribly for the Malaysians. They were clearly off-colour and made far too many mistakes to allow Markis-Hendra to take the opener with an easy 21-13 win.

“We started slow but, fortunately, we managed to get our game going. In fact, we held a good 10-6 lead in the decider and did well to hold them off until the closing stages,” said Khim Wah, who seemed pleased with the way they handled the pressure from the crowd.

“It was so noisy we could not even hear what our coach (Tan Kim Her) was saying. We did not let them intimidate us. We lost because of our own mistakes.”

With Khim Wah-V Shem’s defeat, there will be no Malaysian representative in any of the individual events.

But Indonesia will be going for a clean sweep of all five gold medals. They are already assured of two after they made it an all-Indonesian final in the men’s and women’s doubles.

In the men’s singles, Taufik Hidayat failed to clear his hurdle after losing 14-21, 16-21 to Thai youngster Tanongsak Saensom-boonsuk, who will take on Indonesia’s Simon Santoso today.

In the women’s singles, Adrianti Ratnasari will face Singapore’s Fu Mingtian, who ended the gallant run of Thailand’s teen sensation Inthanon Ratchanok.

Tantowi Ahmad-Lilyana Natsir are the favourites when they face Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol-T. Saralee in the mixed doubles final.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5254604526068155481.post-85621661431754714452011-11-18T11:51:00.001+08:002012-05-29T14:05:01.948+08:00Ankle Injury Ends Jing Yi’s Hopes Of A Bronze Medal

JAKARTA: Shuttler Tee Jing Yi was on the verge of a big upset in the SEA Games but it all fell apart after injuring her ankle during the quarter-finals of the women’s singles at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Senayan yesterday.

The 20-year-old was progressing confidently in the rubber game against top seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand but a sudden burst of movement from the backline to retrieve a shuttle at the net, while leading 16-14, caused Jing Yi to fall and injure her ankle.

She bravely fought on but while her heart was willing, her injured leg couldn’t take the strain as she tried to ward off the relentless attack by the Thai girl.

Finally, Jing Yi crumbled 21-16, 14-21, 17-21 and was left ruing her missed opportunity of at least a bronze in her Games debut.

“I almost had Porntip but the fall caused me great pain. I tried to hold on but she took advantage of my restricted movement,” lamented Jing Yi as she tended to her swollen ankle.

“All my matches against Porntip have been close. It is quite frustrating. I hope to recover in time to make the trip to the Macau Open in two weeks’ time.”

There was no happy ending either for the rest of the shuttlers in the Malaysian team, except for the men’s doubles pair of Lim Khim Wah-Goh Wei Shem.

Lydia Cheah, Liew Daren, Mak Hee Chun-Ong Soon Hock, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Ong Jian Guo-Sabrina Chong all fell by the wayside yesterday.

Much was expected of Daren, but he crashed out at 20-22, 12-21 to Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia.

National doubles coach Tan Kim Her said Hee Chun-Soon Hock could not sustain their form in the 14-21, 13-21 loss to top seeds Bona Septano-Mohd Ahsan.

“They had no problems with their service returns but they did not have the killer shots. Their attack was a letdown,” said Kim Her.

Indonesian Open Grand Prix winners Khe Wei-Vivian also gave a good fight before running out of steam to lose 22-24, 15-21 to Anneke Feinya Agustine-Nitya Krishina Maheswari of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Khim Wah-V Shem, are assured a solitary bronze medal for Malaysia in the individual event.

They thrashed Myanmar’s Than Lwin Aung-Thet Lwin Myint 21-5, 21-13 to set up a meeting with home favourites Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan in the semi-finals.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5254604526068155481.post-18941069665298188982011-11-17T11:15:00.003+08:002012-05-29T14:05:16.210+08:00SEA GAMES: Smooth Sailing For Malaysians

There were few surprises in the Sea Games badminton individual competition at Istora Senayan yesterday as most of the national players cleared the opening round without too much trouble.

Lydia plays fourth seed Fu Mingtian of Singapore in the quarter-finals while Tee Jing Yi meets top seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk after beating Bianca Carlos of the Philippines 21-7, 21-11.

Men's doubles Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah, who could be a major threat to both Indonesian pairs after beating Mohammad Ahsan-Bona Septano in the team event, easily cleared the first round by eliminating Singapore's Liu Yi-Terry Yeo 21-14, 21-8.

They will next meet Myanmar's Than Lwin Aung-Thet Lwin Myint while Mak Hee Chun-Ong Soon Hock accounted for Singapore's Jeffrey Wong-Johnathan 21-10, 21-14 to set up a date with Thai fourth seeds Patiphat Chalardchalaem-Nipitphon Phuangphuapet.

In the men's singles, Liew Daren advanced to a meeting with top seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia after beating Antonino Velarde of the Philippines 21-11, 21-10 but Arif Latif went out, but not before giving Indonesian third seed Simon Santoso a fight in a 21-11, 12-21, 21-17 defeat.

Velarde returned to haunt Malaysia in the mixed doubles when he joined forces with Gelita Castillo to hand Lutfi Zaim Khalid-Lai Peng Jing a 21-19, 21-18 loss but Ong Jian Guo-Soon Hock remain in the hunt after overcoming Vietnam's Nguyen Hoang Hai-Le Thu Huyen 21-17, 21-18, although they next play top seeds Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thungtongkam of Thailand.

Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei brushed aside Nguyen Thi Sen-Vu Thi Trang of Vietnam 21-14, 21-11 in the women's doubles and will play Anneke Feinya Agustine-Nitya Krishinda of Indonesia for a place in the semi-finals.

Men's doubles Goh V Shem-Lim Kim Wah certainly will be a pair to watch when the individual events start today after scoring an upset win over top seeds Bona Septano-Muhammad Ahsan in front of a hostile crowd.

Coach Tan Kim Her was certainly impressed and pronounced himself satisfied despite settling for silver again as Indonesia retained the gold.

"The back-up players turned in impressive performances especially the first doubles. Even (Liew) Daren, if he had won the first game, things could have turned out differently.

"But this is a good test for them and I'm impressed with how they handled themselves in this environment," said Kim Her.

Indonesia sprang a surprise by omitting former Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat, the top seed in men's singles, from their line-up and promoting Simon Santoso to first singles.

The move paid off when Simon beat Daren 22-20, 21-12 but V Shem-Khim Wah dragged Malaysia back into the tie with an 18-21, 21-15, 25-23 upset of Bona-Ahsan.

Tommy Sugiarto, however, regained the lead for Indonesia with a 21-13, 21-17 beating of Arif Latif before Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan showed they were a class above with a 21-10, 21-14 win over Mak Hee Chun-Ong Soon Hock.
JAKARTA: Shuttler Vivian Hoo is one cool customer.

While the entire crowd was against her at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno, the 19-year-old pencil-thin Vivian stayed calm to combine superbly with Woon Khe Wei to win the solitary point in Malaysia’s 3-1 defeat by Indonesia in the team semi-final on Saturday.

They had beaten Indonesia’s top pair of Anneke Feinya-Nitya Krishinda Maheswari in a one-hour and 21-minute marathon but a twist of fate may see both pairs cross path again early in the individual competition, which begins today.

In the draw released yesterday, Indonesian Open Grand Prix champions Vivian-Khe Wei are expected to meet the Indonesian duo in the quarter-finals – an encounter worthy of being the final.

Vivian has vowed to remain unperturbed by the hostile surroundings as she sharpens her claws in a bid to defy the odds.

“This is my first SEA Games and what a great exposure it has been so far. I didn’t let the fans intimidate me and I plan to do the same in the individual meet,” said Vivian.

“The match against the Indonesian pair will be a close one again. Khe Wei and I must not make silly mistakes and play confidently – just like the other day.”

Vivian-Khe Wei are seen as the only pair with a chance of winning a gold medal at the Games as the others may find the Indonesian and Thai shuttlers too big a challenge.

The Thai women are really buoyed by their 3-1 win over Indonesia for the gold medal while the men will be just as big a threat after their 3-2 defeat in another marathon match.

In the men’s singles, both Liew Daren and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif may return home without any medals as they are likely to play top seed Taufik Hidayat and Simon Santoso of Indonesia respectively.

It will be equally tough for Malaysia in the men’s doubles as Mak Hee Chun-Ong Soon Hock are set to face top seeds Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano of Indonesian in the quarter-finals while Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem are likely to meet Thailand’s Bodin Isara-Maneepong Jonjit.

The Thai pair beat Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the team tie.

It will be tough for Malaysia in the women’s singles and mixed doubles as Thailand’s Inthanon Ratchanok and Indonesia’s Ahmad Tantowi-Lilyana Natsir are the heavy favourites.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5254604526068155481.post-39293165439242189332011-11-16T11:04:00.002+08:002012-05-29T14:07:01.148+08:00Dynamic Duo May Earn A Spot In Thomas Cup Squad

JAKARTA: Youngsters Lim Khim Wah and Goh V Shem nailed more than just a silver medal in their SEA Games debut in the men’s badminton team competition at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Senayan.

Their strong performance has impressed the selectors and it could earn them a place in next year’s Thomas Cup Finals squad.

Yesterday, world No. 27 Khim Wah-V Shem put up a top-class display to provide the only glitter in Malaysia’s 3-1 defeat by defending champions Indonesia.

The odds were stacked against Khim Wah-V Shem but they turned on the power to upstage world No. 6 Bona Septano-Mohd Ahsan 21-18, 15-21, 25-23 in a nail-biting 66-minute struggle.

Earlier, Liew Daren showed much promise in taking Simon Santoso the distance before losing 20-22 in the opening game of their first singles. But Daren could not sustain the pressure against the strong attacks of the rejuvenated Simon and lost the next game 21-12.

Khim Wah-V Shem levelled the tie at 1-1 but it failed to inspire both Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Mak Hee Chun-Ong Soon Hock.

Arif did show some fighting spirit after trailing 2-9 in the second game but it all came to nought against Tommy, the son of Icuk Sugiarto. He lost 21-13, 21-17.

Hopes were high on Hee Chun-Soon Hock to push Olympic and world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan to the limit but they were easily beaten 21-19, 21-14.

The 22-year-old V Shem was happy that they were not cowed by the hostile fans. In fact, on two occasions, he turned around to the fans to show that he wasn’t falling for their antics.

Of course, it earned him boos from the vociferous fans and a warning from the umpire.

“All the fans were against us but I jeered at them so as to motivate myself and show that I am far from intimidated,” he said.

Said Kim Wah: “We really stepped up our speed and power today. We hope our strong showing will get us into the Thomas Cup squad.”

National doubles chief coach Tan Kim Her was happy with the back-up team’s overall performances despite the defeat.

“Everyone in the team gave their best and that mattered most. After all, we were up against a strong team,” he said.

“I am very impressed with Khim Wah-V Shem. This was their opportunity to show me whether they are good enough for the Thomas Cup Finals and they’ve certainly proved their point.”

The men's swept past Singapore 3-0 with little trouble and will meet the hosts, who struggled to subdue Thailand 3-2, in tomorrow's final.

Arif Latif was the only player to get into some trouble, needing three games to get past Ashton Chen 21-14, 12-21, 21-15 in the second singles.
"This is my first match here. I'm a little unhappy with how I played but thankfully I won and we are in the final.
"I hope to play better in the final. I'll probably meet Simon (Santoso), whom I've played before," said Arif, who was rested in Malaysia's 3-1 quarter-final win over Vietnam.
Indonesia suffered an early setback when Taufik Hidayat crashed 21-13, 21-16 to Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk while Markis Hido-Hendra Setiawan were stunned by the unheralded Maneepong Jongjit-Bodin Isara 22-20, 21-23, 21-18.
Simon, Hayom Rumbaka and Bona Septano-Mohammad Ahsan came to the hosts' rescue in a nervy performance.
Malaysia, missing many players from the 2009 gold medal winning team, briefly threatened an upset in the women's semi-finals when Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei burnished their growing reputations by upsetting Vita Marissa-Nadya Melati 21-19, 21-23, 28-26 to draw Malaysia level at 1-1.
